MSA Trust

Raising funds and awareness in support of my mum….

Read about our committed fundraiser, Nellie Rogers who recalls her experience of doing a variety of events in support of her mum, and to raise much needed funds and awareness.

We found it very hard when my mum was diagnosed with MSA. We had never heard of it and was not sure what was in store for the rest of her life. I tried to research the condition and that’s when we discovered the MSA Trust. We found great comfort in knowing the Trust, as I had lots of unanswered questions and they had all the information I needed. So, I decided to get involved and help raise funds for the Trust and awareness of this rare condition….

To mark MSA Awareness Month, in March 2019 I organised and hosted a day long MSA event. There was a raffle and stalls where small businesses paid to sell a range of products, from beauty stations and games, to food items as well. This was followed by a quiz and bingo in the evening. The organisation was a lot of hard work, but well worth the effort as I raised £1,000 from that day alone!

This wasn’t the end of my support for the Trust though. The same year I took part in the ASICS London 10k (formerly British 10k) run in July, running to fundraise for MSA Trust. I didn’t train and I’m not the most active person, but I decided for a good cause and something that means so much to me personally, I will push myself to finish this. It felt great to be running around London seeing scenes I don’t get to see every day. At the end of it all, I am proud to say I raised over £500 for the charity through the run.

Earlier in 2020 I hosted a darts tournament in honour of my mum who used to play before she became too ill. It was a great night with a really good turnout. We had semi professionals and amateurs, and it was blind pairs so it was a good mix for everyone to get involved. This was another successful night again, raising over £500.

I’m gutted I haven’t been able to raise much more this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. But I do have a few more things planned, and hopefully we will be able to start again soon!
