MSA Trust

Anyone for tea?

The Trust’s Interim CEO, Karen Walker, gears up for her Milk, Sugar And Tea Party

I’ve never really considered myself a budding Mary Berry but the Trust’s Milk, Sugar And Tea Party has given me the chance to find out.

I’m not sure if I’ll go for mini victoria sponges, double chocolate brownies, Darjeeling, Earl Grey or the lot. Luckily, I’ve enlisted the help of family and friends as we gear up for my Milk, Sugar And Tea Party on Saturday, 3 October. And we’re making it just our cup of tea by adding some fizz to make it extra special.

Being a list person I’m taking great joy in ticking off what I have to do:

  • a quick ‘save the date’ email to make sure as many people as possible find out about my tea party;
  • send out invites;
  • talk to some local cafes and bakeries to see if they’ll donate some cakes;
  • decide on recipes;
  • and here’s the fun bit, delegate some of the baking.

Our founder, Sarah Matheson, was my very good friend and I saw first-hand how dreadful MSA can be. And while you can’t compare the impact of any disease, they’re all pretty dreadful, I think there’s something particularly challenging about an illness that so few people have heard of, even health professionals.

It means that MSA, as well as being a horrendous disease, is also very isolating and lonely. So it’s really important that as many people as possible get behind our Milk, Sugar And Tea Party, not just this year but in the future too.

But that’s enough serious talk. The tea party should be a fun event and it’s given me an excuse to invite friends and family round to eat cake, drink tea and have a glass or two of fizz. What’s not to like? Of course, I’ll be placing the collection box in the centre of the table and encouraging everyone to be generous.

Back to deciding on recipes. And who knows, this time next year it could be me on The Great British Bake Off!
