Sarah’s Wood November Tree Planting

Last Saturday Tanya and I were delighted to see so many of our wonderful supporters turn out to plant more trees in Sarah’s Wood. It was definitely what Sarah (a Scotswoman) would have described as a ‘driech’ day!! Cloudy, damp and very grey. So the smiles of welcome and hello amongst our MSA community were very gratefully received.

This year the Woodland Trust is asking everyone to pledge to plant a tree to help to protect the environment. At Sarah’s Wood we are doing just that

Everyone was well prepared with wellies, hats, waterproofs, and our kind foresters Jim and Neil met us with 50 saplings to plant and lots of spades.

An added bonus was being able to do a bit of Christmas shopping at the Winterfest Fair that was happening in the Thoresby courtyard. There were lots of activities on offer as well as a great place to have a hot lunch or a cup of tea after the planting to warm up again. There were lots of stalls and I even saw a white-bearded, red-coated jolly looking person strolling around.

The Wood was looking wintry, but at least the rain stayed off and thanks to all of you who attended we managed to get about 40 of the saplings into the ground. Due to the really bad flooding there had been in the area the weeks before tree planting day it had not been possible for the new set of bricks to be laid on our path to a cure, but now that the colder weather is on it’s way and the ground hardens up it should be possible to have them laid before tree planting in January 2020.

While our wood develops and grows, I wanted to remind people of the opportunity it gives to those living with MSA and those who have lost people to MSA to plant a tree and help us grow the ‘Path To A Cure’ for people with MSA. The wood is our beacon of hope for all those living with MSA. The Sherwood Oak is a strong healthy oak that will grow for a long time. In sight of Sarah’s Wood is the ancient woodland of Sherwood Forest, where some trees are still thriving after 800 years. Some of those with MSA who planted a tree back in 2017 are sadly no longer with us today, but their tree and their hope to find a cure lives on in the trees that are growing stronger and taller every day.

Take a look on our website to find out when the next tree planting will be in January 2020 and if you would like to bring someone with MSA to plant a tree we will be very happy to welcome them.
