Greater Manchester MSA Trust Support Group Visit Disabled Living

A few weeks ago the Greater Manchester Support Group had their quarterly meeting at The Disabled Living Centre situated in Worsley.

Disabled Living is a charity which provides impartial information about equipment (assistive technology) and services for disabled adults, children, older people and the professionals who support them. The Worsley centre is located in the middle of an industrial estate and was a little difficult to find but inside it has been purpose built serving all of Greater Manchester. It works in partnership with Salford Community Equipment Services and other Local Authorities. Disabled Living offer a wide range of services to support independent living, make life easier and improve quality of life. With their team of health and social care professionals, together with knowledgeable information officers, Disabled Living can offer solutions to what may seem unmanageable problems.

We met two OT’s, Jude and Jayne, who initially gave us some background to what Disabled Living could offer, then we were shown round the centre and were able to look and have hands on experience of the various pieces of equipment. They can do home visits to give individual advice but at a cost, whereas visiting the centre is free. They can also ask Manufacturers to bring in specific pieces of equipment, if the centre doesn’t already have it. They have the centre divided up into “rooms” with all the appropriate equipment displayed in that area, so a kitchen area, a bedroom area with different types of electric and profiling beds, a wet-room and a bathroom area. They also have walking aids, chairs, hoists, stair lifts, assistive technologies and small aids. There is also a continence service (PromoCon) with a display of continence items and appointments can be arranged with that team and also an equipment shop onsite too where items could be purchased.

Over a welcome cup of tea or coffee, we were then able to ask individual questions and share experiences. People tried out the stair lift and some walking aids. It was left that members could make individual appointments to obtain more specific impartial advice if that was helpful. Members of the group expressed how informative it had been and that they had seen pieces of equipment that they did not know existed.

We were very grateful for the insights we were offered and for the information and hospitality shown to us and would recommend others to have a visit to a similar centre if they have any issues that they are struggling with, or just to see the range of equipment that is available if required.

If you would like to visit the centre or for free and impartial advice about equipment please call 0161 607 8200.

If you can’t get to our centre but are looking for suppliers of equipment, check out our Suppliers Directory (www.disabledliving.co.uk/Supplier-Directory)! It’s an interactive resource filled with trusted suppliers.
