MSA Trust

Mile a day for 75 days

Come rain or shine, supporter Gill Thomas did her mile a day for MSA Trust, raising close to £550. Gill recalls her experience and pays tribute to our member, Chris Banks.

I completed my challenge of running at least a mile a day for 75 days on 5th February, my 52nd birthday, having started on 23rd November the year before. Most of the runs were early in the morning and a lot were very cold or wet! I went on holiday to Spain for a week in January, so the mile a day was a bit more pleasant along the beach. I ended up running more than my target, completing 94 miles over the 75 days, and posted them on Instagram every day as ‘proof’. Very pleased to say I did not skip a single day, not even Christmas and Boxing day!

I am very grateful to kind supporters who helped me raise vital funds for MSA Trust. I chose the charity as my friend, Kate’s mother, Chris Banks had suffered from MSA for a few years.

Chris sadly passed away 4 days after I finished the challenge. Kate, her sister Vicky and Chris’s husband, John were with her when she died, as they had been in her last few weeks. Chris was a lovely lady, and had such a devoted family – this of course made the challenge all the more poignant. During Chris’s last few weeks, I spoke to Kate every morning before I went on my run, whilst she sat with her mum. I thought about them a lot on these runs, which definitely kept me going as I was finding it difficult towards the end!
