Fish Oil and MSA.

I have recently been reading about the powerful effects of the essential polyunsaturated oil, Omega-3 DHA and EPA, more commonly known as fish oil, its said to prevent the brain shrinking in diseases like schizophreina (along with its effects in preventing heart disease).

Most of the brain is made from DHA and many processes within the brain require this EPA and DHA (as essential fatty acids) or they do not form properly.

A lot of its effects are proven scientifically to be benefical. (see the wikipedia entry on omega-3 for a full list)

But one of the effects of this oil, if taken in very large quantities is to thin the blood, which could add to the blood pressure problems with MSA.

Still, I would definately buy some as a supplement (you can get them as 1000mg tablets in the ALDI) and start taking 1-2 per day. 2 grams per day is meant to be a benefical dose.
I rather like the taste of fish oil. You also get about 2 grams of Omega-3 DHA and EPA in about 85g (1 tin) of sardines BTW. One smoked mackeral is about 120-150 grams and contains about 3-4 grams Omega-3. The reccommended amount is 7-11 grams per week.

It may help somewhat in slowing the disease down perhaps preventing the rate that the inclusion proteins form in the brain cells. By taking this your giving your brain the best resources you can to fight the illness, so its worth a try.

Dont know about the effect of fish oil on the brain, but I take fish oil every day and it has definitely had a beneficial effect on my copious amounts of very dry skin (arms and legs mostly)

I'm fairly early on with the disease (I was only diagnosed last August) but atm I find that daily sretching and as much exercise as I can take before coat hanger sets in is goood for both body and mind.

I have tried some homeopathic remedies without any great benefit

Any advice regarding restless legs?

Many people do find complementary therapies helpful. Massage and aromatherapy can certainly help with neck stiffness and acupuncture can relieve pain. I would advise against a full body massage as this can lower blood pressure, but massage to neck and shoulders is ideal. We have an information leaflet on complementary therapies at the Trust we can post to anyone who requests it.

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) can respond to magnesium, but be aware this can cause constipation. There are also dopamine agonists that can be prescribed specifically for RLS, (a smaller dose than that used for Parkinson's symptoms) so do discuss this with your specialist if it is problematic.

Kind regards, Samantha. MSAT Nurse.
